Nonlinear Evolution of the Resistive MHD Modes and Sawtooth Oscillation in a Toroidal Plasma

The nonlinear stabilities of resistive MHD modes are investigated by a three dimensional MHD simulation based on a rectangular column model under the fixed boundary condition. These modes for a tokamak configuration with q_a ≳ 3 and q_o ≲ 2 (q_a : safety factor at the wall, q_o : safety factor at the center) are examined. To explain the saw-tooth oscillation in detail, the nonlinear evolution of resistive MHD modes is studied which, through magnetic island formation, leads either to a saturation of these modes (a new non-axisymmetric equilibrium) or to a redistribution of the flux ψ^* and field line reconnection in Kadomtsev's sense (a new axisymmetric equilibrium). Resistive modes with low poloidal mode number (m=2,3,…) are considered to interpret some internal disruptions observed in tokamaks.
