Having new materials at hand, Japanese Smilacina are taxonomically revised. As a result, four species. S. japonica, S. robusta, S. viridiflora and S. yesoensis, are recognized as distinct species. The former two species are characterized by having hermaphrodite flowers and long styles, while the latter two species by having unisexual flowers (dioecious) and styles shorter than 2/3 times as long as ovary. S. japonica is clearly distinguished from S. robusta by having styles longer than ovary, non trifid stigmas, hairs of inflorescence being 0.3-0.8 mm long, rhizomes being ca. 5 mm across and internodes of rhizome being 1.5-3 cm long. On the other hand, S. viridiflora is clearly distinguished from S. yesoensis by having styles longer than half as long as ovary, pubescent inflorescence, rhizomes being ca. 1-1.5 cm across and internodes of rhizomes being 1 cm long. Based on the herbarium specimens deposited in GIFU, GPM, KANA, KYO, SHIN, TI and TNS, distribution maps of these four species are given. Plants of S. robusta lacking flowers is very similar to S. viridiflora. Thus all specimens examined of them for the present study are cited in the appendix.
