The validity of cyanoprocaryotic (cyanophycean/cyanobacterial) genera Gloeocapsopsis GEITLER 1925 and Asterocapsa CHU 1952 were hesitated, because their morphology is similar to stages occurring in the vegetative cycle of Gloeocapsa (mainly as those the resting ensheathed cells enveloped by firm, coloured and sometimes structured envelopes). These stages appear in Gloeocapsa usually under suboptimal conditions, in dried-up localities, during overwintering, etc. However, populations morphologically similar to these resting stages exist, which never acquire the typical Gloeocapsa morphology, their cells divide intensely within the firm envelopes, and they live in special ecology. They should be classified as stabilized morphotypes, derived from gloeocapsoid cyanoprocaryotes; their classification at the generic level (Gloeocapsopsis, Asterocapsa) is necessary (at least until their whole potential variability is known).-Because the genus Gleocapsopsis is invalidly described, its description is completed and validated by a Latin diagnosis, and two species of this genus from central Japan and Himalayas are discussed. Three new species (two from the Himalayas based on the specimens in TNS, and one from San Luis Potosi, Mexico) corresponding with the genus Asterocapsa are described.
