In order to investigate the pathogenesis of hypertensive vascular changes in SHRSP, morphological studies were made of kidneys and adrenals, where these lesions are frequently observed. The relationship between the arterial runways and vascular changes were investigated by microangiography, the tetralin clearing method, and scanning electron microscopy. The incidence of hypertensive vascular changes in the kidneys of SHRSP (F_<52>-F_<60>) aged 50 days or over was the same as that in the brain, being 78% in males and 81% in females. Changes in the adrenals occurred in 62% of the males and 74% of females. At the bifurcation of the renal artery from the abdominal aorta, recurrent or right angular branching was noted in 87% of the right renal arteries and 37% of the left renal arteries. However, there were no differences between the right and the left kidneys as far as the vascular lesion incidence rate was concerned. At the bifurcation of the afferent arterioles from the interlobular artery, the average branching angles were approximately 120° (recurrent branching) in the inferior 1/3,approximately 80° (right angular branching) in the middle 1/3,and approximately 40° (current branching) in the superior 1/3. Vascular changes in the kidneys were mainly detected in those afferent arterioles which branched either recurrently or right angularly at the inner cortex. There was a great deal of variation in the origins and branchings of the suprarenal arteries, a high incidence of vascular changes being noted mainly in the areas of the middle and inferior suprarenal arteries which have prominent long runs in the capsule. Recurrent and/or right angular branches were observed in the runways of the middle and inferior suprarenal arteries in the capsule, with some of the branches entering the zona glomerulosa only to loop and/or return sharply. The incidence rate for vascular changes was noticeably higher in the peripheries of such arterial runways. The specific arterial runways observed in the kidneys and adrenals play a role in the physiological function in each organ ; however, under the abnormally hypertensive state of SHRSP, these specific arterial runways apparently accelerate the incidence of vascular changes.
