Visual and vocal nonverbal behaviors of 141 college students, who acted as candidates in a simulated presidential debate, were recorded during their introduction to the audience. The subjects' change of eyeshift rate-from the base line period to the introduction period-reflected Zuckerman's sensation seeking scale scores. Their change of eyeblink rate related to Cacioppo and Petty's need for cognition scale scores. Vocal fundamental frequency increased from the base line period to the introduction period. However, those subjects who had both low sensation seeking scores and low need for cognition scores did not much increase their average vocal pitch frequency. The standard deviation of vocal pitch showed changes similar to those of the eyeshift rate, but not to those of the eyeblink rate. Overt nonverbal behaviors reflected both affective and cognitive factors separately. Implications for the actor-observer study are discussed.
