Confusions result from ambiguous distinctions between brightness (dim to bright) and lightness (black to white), which led to discrepancy between Jameson and Hurvich (1961b) and Flock and Noguchi (1970). Jameson and Hurvich found that dark objects may appear darker in appearance with a general increase in illumination. However, Flock and Noguchi failed to find this phenomenon. In the present experiment, the black object appeared grayish in the dark, and appeared more blackish as the illumination was increased, as Jameson and Hurvich reported. In conclusion, Flock and Noguchi would have found the grayish appearance of the black area, if they had decreased the illumination of their test area further and if they had enlarged their displays.
