In this research, we propose to apply graded-index (GRIN) to astigmatism correction in a progressive addition lens (PAL). We adopted the diffusion copolymerization method for the GRIN-PAL fabrication. The GRIN material was prepared by partial diffusion of methyl methacrylate monomer into a cross-linked benzyl methacrylate polymer gel. A polymer-based GRIN-PAL was successfully fabricated by molding the GRIN material using a commercially available PAL. As a result, astigmatism reduction was demonstrated by the introduction of GRIN. It was indicated that the GRIN material is applicable for the further modification of conventional PALs.
