Unsteady flow phenomenon called surging occurs in a pipe system with a turbo type compressor or a fan as a pressure source when operation flow rate is smaller than a certain limit. During this phenomenon, a noise occurs, and when the phenomenon is excessive, it may result in damages on the apparatus. It is useful to predict the surging fluctuation before operation. A centrifugal fan system is replaced by a lumped-parameter model and a series of numerical simulation was carried out by changing parameters. In this simulation a equation treatment program was used. To verify the results a series of experiments have been done. A centrifugal fan pipe system of maximum pressure rise of 2.1 kPa with the flow rate of 3 m3/min is used in the experiments. Comparison between simulated results and experiment showed good agreement for surging frequency and 10 % error for pressure fluctuation amplitude.
