The examination of occlusal force and occlusal pressure plays an important role in the clinical periodontal therapy. This study is to investigate the reproducibility and usefullness of Dental Prescale^[○!R] system (Fuji Photo Film Co.) in the periodontal examinations. The coefficient of variation of reading by the scanner in Dental Prescale^[○!R] system was shown as follows : occlusal force, 4.90% ; occlusal area, 4.95% ; average pressure, 2.06% ; and maximum pressure, 10.55%. In order to standardize the method of examination with Dental Prescale^[○!R] films, 10 films repeatedly taken for each of 5 subjects were analysed and it was found that the occlusal force became stable as the repetition number of examination increased. The 206 periodontitis teeth selected from 22 patients were examined using Dental Prescale^[○!R] and no relationship was found between probing pocket depth and Dental Prescale values. However, the teeth having greater tooth mobility showed smaller occlusal force and occlusal area. These results indicate that the Dental Prescale^[○!R] system was useful in the functional examination of the periodontal therapy, if it is properly and carefully used in the operation and analysis of the data.
