We consider the propagation model of X-ray variability of accreting black holes in the geometry of an inner hot accretion flow. We show that the model predicts weaker variability of the Fe Kα line, compared to the variability of the hard X-rays which presumably drive the line emission. There is also a lack of variability coherence between the line and the continuum. These effects are clearly observed both in active galactic nuclei and galactic black hole binaries.
