An asymmetric photonic crystal slab waveguide was analyzed for the first time. This waveguide exhibits an inclined dispersion relation (i.e., a large group velocity) without a mini-band gap and thus has a large bandwidth for the single guided mode (14% of the center-band frequency). This structure consists of a line defect and air holes $\pi$-phase-shifted on one side of the line defect. The present asymmetric structure prevents Bragg reflection from occurring in the light propagation direction at the interface between the photonic crystal and the line defect. The frequency of the TE-like guided mode decreases more than that of the TM-like guided mode when the waveguide width is increased.
